Topic: Whanau Hui 2008!

The sequel has to be better than the original. So how are we going to do this?

Heres your opportunity to give your thoughts and ideas for the next Whanau hui.

There will be a meeting of the executive committee for WXT 2008 in September. After this I hope to produce the first Panui for the Hui. I will post that Panui on the website as well as sending it out via e-mail. Any early suggestions should be placed on the website for consideration by the executive committee.

Nga mihi ki a koutou katoa e te whanau - having participated and survived the last fabulous event, am keen to start stating now an expectation that a registration fee for the hui will need to be way in excess of the $100 for the last.  We were heavily subsidised in the last hui and that wont be available to us next time.  $10 per person per day is definitely not enough particularly if not everyone attends each day.  We have 3 years to save for it - I propose a budget set at $50 per person per day, $25 per student per day - $10 per child per day.

Okay so we have had comment from two members of the executive committee. I was expecting a plethora of comment after the subject was launched. Come on you lot how about some input!

First idea……I thought we should engage in an inter whanau Kapa Haka competition. We could use the same groups as the Whakataitai Tina teams used last year or maybe we could make it a Australia V NZ thing…….Any thoughts please.

Second Idea………… Those of you who are inclined to compose we should be looking at coming up with a whanau waiata aringa, a whanau Poi, a whanau hymn and a whanau haka…. Again your thoughts please.

3rd Idea might be to determine categories around performances as in the Tuahiwi Idol breakdown - Midgees, Intermediates and Seniors?

The other idea for the whanau “Cook Off” was to break that into teams of Rangatahi, Tuakana and Kaumatua categories?

Kia Ora Te Whanau

My son Peter left for the high sea on the 21st July and will return in 7 to 8 weeks. He made a suggestion of a whanau inter sports day (Rugby, touch, cricket etc.) or Australia V New Zealand.

I would like to suggest some board games ( Chess, Scrabble, Monopoly, Draughts etc). Again some of these could be competition with whoever.

How about the dance routine arobics not the heavy workout stuff ( I remember in 1996 at the Barrett reunion, cousin Amiria took us through some)

How many days are we looking at for the hui? a thought 7-8days
$10 per person per day is definitely not realistic and I propose a set cost of $25 per person per day $13 per student per day (9-16? years) and $6 per child per day (aprox 0-8 years)

Love the idea of the kapa haka, the inter whanau or each whanau group or Australia V New Zealand sounds good. Also like the second idea...to compose, whanau waiata etc. Love the word cuz plethora (so here it is) Good idea to determine catergories.

Still thinking about the “Cook Off” Rangatahi? Tuakana? Kaumatua? Categories.

More suggestions.....to keep the Court sessions, another Auction,a Fairytale dressup evening, brides of yesteryear and present, an afternoon of flax making (flowers..) weaving...poi making, hat dressup afternoon, whanau singalong.

Perhaps mobile security around the complex on a regular basis.

After a little thought 2008 isn’t that far away!
The Maori theme is always a winner as is the competition that comes with it
The whanau getting together and composing some waiata, haka etc is a great idea. Always wanted something like that!
The financial side of the hui will always be viewed differently by other parties so we’ve got one or two years to come up with a price that will cater for all.Breaking it down to three gatorgories is also fair.
Lets get our basic prices done and then take it from there?
Be down in CHC soon and I’m sure there will be a few comments on screen before I get there?
Looking forward to other comments. Lets use this technology to our benefit

loves ya all!

sweet as! early birth hic-cups bound to happen.

Reriti - Jul/29  at  09:24 PM

For the kids programme, Im really wanting to have a water fight.
Which includes:
Water Bombs
Water Guns/Pistols
Buckets/bottles of water

That would be the shizzle ma nizzle!

Annamarie Hack - Jul/30  at  04:55 PM

Kia ora

Our Whanau thinks that the sports one is a good idea NZ vs Aussies that also includes volleball, T Ball, Softball and Netball, also we would like to suggest a skitz nite. Reriti, the girls agree with your idea of the water fight, does this include adults because in 2008 your cousins will be adults and they want to play...LOL

Another suggestion is Lip sync competition, you have to dress up as the person you are portraying.
Keep the dinner competitions in but have a different nationalities.

Reriti - Jul/30  at  07:17 PM

yeah adults can be included and those other events sounds like fun 2!

Michael-Francis - Aug/01  at  05:28 PM

Guns,bombs,bottles........mmmm yeah!thats me!
I’ve trained for that!...oh!..um!..no my training was more to do with how to take a C.O (commanding officer)A.W.O.L in asia and get promoted.

Michael-Francis - Aug/01  at  05:31 PM

How about teams in the ultimate game or lazer strike?

Reriti - Aug/03  at  08:39 PM

ohhh yeah but would they be toy 1’s like some kids x-mas present or would we go to lazer strike?

Kahuna - Aug/04  at  04:47 PM

So.... lots of good stuff. By the looks of the Jokes section it occurs to me that we might need a stand up comic night (aye Mick)rather than one of the Idol Nights....

Michael-Francis - Aug/12  at  12:23 AM

What did one black cat say to the other black?

You look like me-ow! cool smile

Xmas 2008
1. I agree with $30 per day per adult and all other fees
2. The teams should be mixed ie gender, age, nationality
3. As above
4. As above
5. We would have to have The water fight it away from the Marae eg beach, river. The tank would never cater for it.
6. Volunteer Tutors teach a Waiata, Waiata a ringa, poi, haka to the Whanau right there. I offer to teach Pine pine te kura.
7. I offer to facilitate a 2 hour Whakapapa session
8. Ethnic dinners every night ie Maori ie boil up, Hangi, Ozzy, Chinese, Indian, Mexican, Italian, American, me ara atu mea
9. 3 course brunches (take a whole hour to eat it)
10. Roster the dishes from toddler to Taua. Do our own (is where a lot of Whanaungatanga and Waiata learning happens)
11. Mum’s Tamariki, spouses, friends of that generation or older stay out of the kitchen and catering areas (should be out of bounds unless invited) The second generation and their respective sproggs are quite capable of doing for us and waiting on us. We ought to respect and honour them for that.
12. Definitely, no booze whatsoever in the Wharenui (all rooms)except Xmas dinner.
13. Tena koutou e nga Mokopuna o taku Whaea raua ko taku Matua i o koutou aroha i o koutou manaaki i a matou o koutou Matua Kaumatua katoa. He nui rawa atu te mihi ki a koutou katoa. Noho ora mai Mum/Aunty/Taua Aroha

You had the idea of having Tuahiwi idol. Well what about having tuahiwi idol extreme....where you have to write and compose your own song as a whanau. Thats if its not to late for ideas. Kia ora whanau

ngawini - Jul/29  at  05:59 PM

This is from ANGLEM:
I think we shud hav like how we had tha dvds 4 last tym, this tym hav seprate dvds that are made entirely of the adults and the other enitirely of the kids and not too much music this time lol
just jokes

Huia-a-Uenuku - Aug/03  at  02:56 PM

1/Definitely think we should stick with quizz nites.

2/learning waiata and haka is in. Composing whanau waiata and haka also good.

3/Was wondereing if we could get blessings to do a bit of mahinga kai for the hui. Paua, tuna, kutae etc… I’ll go and get it.

4/ Could we invite someone to learn us some whakapapa tawhito, Ngai Tahu pakiwaitara etc… learn a bit more about the Ngai Tuahuriri rohe.

5/ It would be nice to share stories/ whanau experiences/ and aspirations/ sing waiata/ one night in the wharenui, on the comfort of our beds and blankets. That way we learn more about what makes us as a whanau tick.

6/ How about we stay one night at Koukourarata, with Poua Charlie and his whanau?
